Gunite Pool Construction

At Professional Pool Company, we believe a pool is more than just water—it’s a permanent addition to your home’s foundation and your family’s lifestyle. That is why we exclusively build custom gunite pools. Unlike vinyl or fiberglass, gunite offers unmatched durability, design flexibility, and longevity, specifically suited for Central Florida’s unique soil and climate conditions.

Gunite Pools: The Best Choice for Central Florida

A gunite pool represents the gold standard in custom swimming pool construction. Unlike fiberglass pools (which are pre-molded) or vinyl liners (which use a temporary plastic sheet), a gunite pool is built directly in your backyard using steel-reinforced concrete. The term “gunite” refers to our specialized dry-mix process where sand and cement are sprayed at high velocity over a heavy cage of steel rebar. The result is a single, monolithic shell that is incredibly dense, watertight, and durable—specifically engineered to withstand Central Florida’s unique soil conditions and climate.

Why Gunite for Florida?

Building a pool in Orlando, Winter Park, or Seminole County comes with unique environmental challenges. Here is why gunite is the superior choice for our specific climate and landscape:

Our Process

The Gunite Pool Construction Process

Undertaking custom pool construction in Florida is a major project that completely transforms your landscape. While every backyard in Central Florida is unique, the fundamental phases of building a high-quality gunite pool remain consistent. Here is the step-by-step journey of how we take your specific design from a 3D concept on paper to a permanent, structural reality in the ground.

Layout & Excavation

We start by painting the pool’s shape directly on the ground for your approval. Once confirmed, heavy machinery digs the soil to the precise contour and depth of your design, carving out the shallow and deep ends.

Steel & Rough Plumbing

To ensure structural integrity, a cage of steel rebar is hand-tied to form the pool’s skeleton. Simultaneously, we install the rough plumbing—the network of pipes, drains, and skimmers that will circulate your water.

The Gunite Application

Concrete (gunite) is pneumatically sprayed over the steel cage at high velocity. This creates a rock-hard, seamless shell that is watertight and incredibly durable—the trademark of a quality permanent pool.

Hardscapes & Decking

Now the pool takes on its style. Craftsmen install the waterline tile and coping (the pool's edge) before laying the surrounding deck. Whether you choose pavers, travertine, or concrete, this step connects the pool.

Interior Finish & Startup

Finally, we apply the waterproof interior surface (such as quartz or pebble) and immediately fill the pool. We then balance the water chemistry, fire up the equipment, and give you a instructions on how to use your new oasis.

Personalized Options

Custom Features & Upgrades

Modern custom gunite pool design has moved far beyond the simple rectangle. A major advantage of choosing gunite construction in Central Florida is the ability to seamlessly integrate luxury features directly into the pool’s structural concrete shell. Because elements like spas and shelves are formed with steel and concrete, they become permanent, durable parts of your custom backyard oasis, tailored specifically to your lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know

Embarking on custom gunite pool construction in Central Florida is a major project, and having the right information is critical to your success. Whether you are curious about typical construction timelines, permitting requirements, or the specific benefits of concrete shells, we are here to help. Below are answers to the most common questions homeowners ask us about building luxury pools in Orlando and the surrounding areas.
While every project is unique, the typical timeline for gunite pool construction in Orlando and surrounding areas is 8 to 12 weeks from excavation to fill. However, the “pre-construction” phase (3D design, HOA approval, and county permitting) can take an additional 4–6 weeks. Factors like summer rainstorms and material availability can also influence the schedule.

Yes. All residential swimming pool projects in Orange, Seminole, Lake, and Volusia counties require a building permit. If you choose our Pro Package, we provide you with fully engineered “permit-ready” plans and guide you through the submission process to ensure your project meets all local safety codes.

Gunite (concrete) is generally preferred over fiberglass in Florida for three reasons: Durability, Customization, and Value. Gunite shells are monolithic (one solid piece), engineered to withstand our sandy soil and high water tables better than pre-molds. Additionally, gunite allows for total design freedom—we can build any shape or depth to fit your specific backyard layout.

Excavation is a major construction event involving heavy machinery, so some impact is unavoidable. The grass in the “access path” will likely need to be replaced, and irrigation lines may need to be capped. However, once the pool deck and hardscapes are installed, your yard is transformed into a clean, cohesive outdoor living space.

Standard pool excavation equipment (like a Bobcat) typically requires an access path of 5 to 7 feet wide to move from the street to your backyard. If you have fences, a panel may need to be temporarily removed. For tighter spaces, we can utilize smaller machinery, though this may slightly extend the excavation timeline.

Almost! Once the water level reaches the middle of the tile, we perform the pool startup. We turn on the pumps and filters to circulate the water, but the chemistry (pH, alkalinity, and chlorine/salt levels) must be balanced before it is safe for swimmers. This typically takes 2–3 days after filling.

We stand behind our build quality. The structural gunite shell is designed to last a lifetime. For mechanical components, top manufacturers like Pentair or Jandy offer 3-year warranties on pumps, filters, and heaters when installed by a professional. Our consulting team ensures all your equipment is properly registered to maximize your coverage.

A salt system is a chlorine pool—it simply uses a salt cell to generate pure chlorine from dissolved salt, rather than relying on liquid or tabs. We highly recommend salt water systems for Central Florida because they produce softer, less irritating water and generally require less daily maintenance than traditional chlorine pools.
